Iron Heart

Case study written on November 20, 2020

I recently invested in an iPad Pro and have been trying to use it in the early stages of ideation and sketching where possible. Thanks to Affinity Designer on the iPad, I can also now create full vector artwork from the comfort of my sofa or bed as well!

One of the first projects I used the iPad for was a personal commission, bought as a present for the clients nephew.

Created for a young lad called Dylan that's had a special kind of valve implanted in his heart at 10 years old(!), his family want him to see that as something that powers him – like Iron Man's arc reactor – rather than a weakness.

My initial sketches were made in Procreate, and then after the rough was approved I moved over to Affinity Deisgner to create the final vector artwork.

One thing that doesn't really reproduce that well when the artwork is being viewed at a smaller size on Instagram or on my main portfolio, is all the halftone and texture effects. As this was specifically designed to be printed at a large size, incorporating some old school comic/print-type effects seemed the natural choice to bring the illustration to life and give it a bit of depth.

What did you think?

If you enjoyed seeing a bit of a peek at my process – or even if you didn't – it'd be great if you'd let me know. If you could take a couple of minutes to let me know your thoughts it'd really be appreciated.

You can drop me a quick message on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram if that's your thing, or even an old fashioned(?) !

Thanks for stopping by:)

“Simon delivered strong graphics for us as part of a new website project. He listened closely to our brief, acted upon all of our feedback, and produced some great visuals. We really enjoyed working with Simon and look forward to further projects.”

    Charlotte Di Placido, Avtel

“…a very creative thinker who is not afraid to push boundaries and to make people think… a unique style and can turn his hand to any type of project to produce something original…”

    Leoni Bradnam, Sirius Minerals

“We commissioned Simon to produce a graphic based on very specific needs and requirements. Simon certainly came up with the goods. It was also really original, creative and quirky, but still met the brief exactly. Highly recommended!”
